Kes the Band owns Tuesday, this year upping the ante by going south: IZWE - The Village 2023 -part of the massive socially-distanced concert series he staged during the years when the pandemic stole Carnival-will take place not in Port of Spain, where most things happen, but in Kes’s hometown of San Fernando, where it’s sure to be a glorious homage to all things local. The King of Soca has been claiming a night during Carnival week for years-he turned “Machel Monday” into a brand-but 2023 finds more soca artists staking their claims to the calendar. Helmed by the virtuoso New York-based producer Jay Upscale, who recently brought us Machel’s magnificent sold-out concert at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, Machel Friday also features Nigerian superstar Wizkid -as if more incentive was needed. Think of his annual output as a gift to the reveling masses, or an offering to the Carnival gods this year we can gorge on it at Machel Friday, a show celebrating his 40 th anniversary in the business and his only performance for Carnival. As carbs are to a marathon, so is the music of Machel to Carnival. Case in point: the legendary Machel Montano, undisputed king of soca. Surely they must be super human to deliver that level of performance night after night, day after day-for an entire season.
